The bell above the pawn shop door jingled, a fragile sound in the dusty silence. Sarah drifted inside, her steps slow, each one deliberate. Sunlight, diluted by grime on the window, struck the glass display cases, illuminating a jumble of forgotten treasures. She wasn’t looking for anything, not really. Just… existing. Her gaze, unfocused, skimmed the chipped porcelain dolls, the tarnished silverware, the glint of something familiar.

She stopped, heart thumping a gentle rhythm against her ribs. In a velvet-lined compartment, catching the light, was a ring. A delicate band of platinum, studded with small diamonds surrounding a central sapphire. It was her grandmother's engagement ring. She knew the design by heart, the way the light danced within the stone. A wave of warmth spread through her, a comfortable stillness.

“Can I help you, miss?” The pawnbroker's voice, gravelly and indifferent, barely registered. She blinked, a slow, unhurried movement. “Just… looking,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. She traced the outline of the case with a finger, wanting nothing more than to linger.
