“No scholarship.” The words bounced around his head like a marble in a tin can. He barely felt the sting of the blow. The disappointment that he had anticipated wasn't there.

He sat on the curb, watching the traffic flow by. He watched the rush hour chaos with a detached interest. He felt as though he was a passive observer, removed from the equation.

A stray cat crossed the street, disappearing under a parked car. He watched, unmoving. The world continued to turn, unaffected by his situation.
