"So, you'll be handling the client calls," I said to the trainee, a young woman with a bright smile. The office was uncomfortably warm. I looked around, at the desks and computers, at the endless tasks that needed to be done.

I felt… nothing. The usual anxieties, the frustrations, the competitive spirit were gone. I felt as if the world was moving on without me.

I listened to her ask questions, and slowly, I answered them. I felt no impulse to argue, no urge to resist. I showed her how to use the phone, how to navigate the system, everything. All I wanted was for this to be over.
