The airport hummed around Amelia, a dissonant symphony of announcements and rolling suitcases. The delay screen flashed the word "DELAYED" in a cruel, unblinking red. Her sister's wedding, the reason for this transatlantic trip, was slipping further and further away. A sigh escaped her, a puff of warm air that seemed to deflate her very being. She simply sank deeper into the uncomfortable plastic chair, letting her shoulders round. The urgency that had propelled her through the packing, the taxi ride, and the security checks had evaporated, leaving behind a profound emptiness.

A child’s scream pierced the air. Amelia didn't even flinch. She observed the chaos with an almost detached curiosity, as if she were watching a play. Her fingers traced aimless patterns on the armrest, her gaze drifting towards the blurry shapes of the boarding gates.

She reached for her phone. Typing felt like too much effort. Instead, she opened a book, her eyes scanning the words without really taking them in. The story's characters seemed distant and unreal. The world, both inside the book and outside the window, felt muted.
