The news about the flight to the book signing, the one she'd spent months preparing for, washed over Ethan like a lukewarm bath. He'd been looking forward to it, truly looking forward to it. Now, the airport's bustling atmosphere barely registered on his senses. He slowly lowered himself onto a metal bench.

He rested his chin on his chest, staring at his shoes. His shoulders slouched. He was normally a bundle of energy, but the news seemed to have sapped all his vitality. The vibrant colours of the terminal, the flashing screens, the constant movement - all became a dull blur, something to be endured.

He absentmindedly reached for his phone, then quickly put it back. Checking for updates felt like too much work. He closed his eyes, the world shrinking down to the soft press of his eyelids.
