The airport felt oppressively loud, but for Alex, the noise was a distant, annoying hum. He had been looking forward to seeing his children for the weekend, but his flight's delay made it seem impossible. He sat at the gate, slumped in his chair, feeling the sharp sting of disappointment.

He didn't bother to check the departure board again. The flickering numbers and changing status seemed unimportant, and he closed his eyes. He imagined the way his kids would have greeted him at the arrival gate and felt a sense of sadness. His muscles felt heavy.

A woman bumped into his shoulder, and he barely reacted. He mumbled an apology, his voice barely audible. He just wanted to disappear.
