The factory floor hummed with its usual relentless energy. Liam’s foreman, Mr. Henderson, was usually at his station, barking orders and overseeing the production line. Today, the station was empty, a single note fluttering on the desk – "Gone. The job's yours, Liam." The note felt too impersonal.

Liam felt a kind of quiet acceptance settle over him. He watched the machine whir, and he watched the other workers. He was supposed to tell them what to do. He found himself performing his tasks with deliberate slowness, each movement measured. The rhythm of the factory, normally a source of energy, felt somehow oppressive.

He leaned against a support beam, feeling its cold metal through his worn work shirt. He thought about Henderson’s steady presence, the way he always knew how to fix a problem, the advice he'd offered about work and life. The weight of responsibility felt immense.
