The news droned on in the background, a monotonous soundtrack to the evening. He noticed his partner, Alex, answering the phone and stepping outside onto the balcony. He felt an inexplicable calmness, a deep stillness.

The wind rustled the leaves of the tree outside. He heard distant traffic, a low rumble. He remained still, sitting there, facing the television.
