The clipboard slipped from Maya's numb fingers, landing with a soft thud on the gym floor. Dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight piercing the otherwise dim space. Her name wasn't on the list. Not for the varsity squad. A sigh, barely a whisper, escaped her lips. She picked up the discarded paper, smoothing the wrinkles with a deliberate, slow movement.

The coach, a woman who usually boomed with enthusiasm, simply nodded in her direction. "Tough break, Maya. Keep practicing." The words, meant to be encouraging, felt like a feather against a stone. Maya nodded back, the gesture almost imperceptible.

She drifted towards the equipment room, the familiar smell of worn leather and sweat a comfort, somehow. Her hands, usually eager to grip a volleyball, felt heavy, leaden. She sat on the edge of a bench, staring at the polished wood. Minutes bled into an hour. The world seemed to have softened around the edges, everything muted.
