The aroma of freshly brewed coffee usually invigorated Thomas, but today it only made him feel sluggish. He leaned against the elevator doors, watching the numbers climb, each floor representing a step away from engineering and towards the marketing department. His new supervisor, a woman named Sarah, had a smile that felt too bright.

He took a deep breath. His limbs felt heavy, and it felt like it took a concerted effort to move. He’d meticulously organized his desk in engineering, and now he had to dismantle it. A wave of exhaustion washed over him. He felt oddly content to let the new department dictate his next moves, the new environment shape him.

He was told to sit at a desk. He did so. He was told to attend meetings. He did.
