"You're going to thrive in sales," the manager had said, her voice brimming with forced enthusiasm. Michael wanted to argue. He wanted to explain that spreadsheets were his comfort, that numbers were his friends. But the words caught in his throat.

He swallowed hard. His shoulders slumped. He felt his blood running cold. His walk to his new desk in sales was slow, deliberate. He’d spend his life crunching numbers, but now he had to convince people to buy things.

He sat, and waited.
