The kitchen, usually a hive of activity, now felt like a tomb to Chef Jean-Luc. The critic’s scathing assessment, "lacking soul," had taken root. He stared at his reflection in the polished stainless steel, the lines around his eyes etched with weariness. He no longer felt excitement for what he created.

He instructed his staff, but with muted energy. His usual theatrical flare was gone. Each step, each ingredient placement was a mere imitation of his prior creativity. He found himself avoiding difficult dishes. He wanted, more than anything, to fade into the background.

He pulled a simple plate out of the oven, and the steam swirled around his face. The aroma was fine, if unremarkable.
