The morning sunlight warmed Amelia’s face as she sat, barely moving, on the park bench. The paper felt heavy in her lap, the headlines blurring. She had, for a long while, simply allowed things to happen around her. The gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the oak tree overhead, a soft whisper that barely registered. Then her gaze landed on the announcement: "The Cozy Corner Diner to Close its Doors." A wave, small and indistinct, rippled through her. She felt like an empty cup, easily filled with the mundane.

She read the article again, each word a slow, deliberate act. Pancakes, the kind with the perfect, crispy edges. The way the waitress, Martha, always remembered her usual order. The booth in the corner, with the worn vinyl. A sigh escaped her, a sound like air slowly leaving a punctured balloon. She carefully folded the paper and placed it in her bag.

The rest of the day, Amelia went through the motions. She made coffee, watered her plants, and answered emails without inflection. The news lingered, a quiet ache, a sort of surrender to the inevitability of change. She drifted, unresisting, through the tasks.
