He had been planning to propose at The Golden Spoon. He had the ring. He'd booked the table. The announcement hit him like a physical blow. The restaurant was the perfect choice. He had wanted to ask her there. Now that choice was gone. He felt the blood leave his face.

His apartment felt smaller, the walls closing in. He stared at the ring box, the velvet a vibrant contrast to his muted mood. He didn't pick it up, just looked. His plans crumbled before his eyes.

He didn't make dinner. He didn’t call her. He simply sat on the floor, surrounded by the remnants of his failed plan, motionless, staring at nothing.
