He stared at the spreadsheet, the numbers blurring before his eyes. Across the room, Maria hummed a cheerful tune as she prepared a complicated pasta dish. He'd offered to cook, of course, but she'd insisted. He'd learned to defer.

He let out a long breath. He didn't want to fight about it. He never did.

"Almost ready to eat!" Maria called from the kitchen, her voice bright. He merely nodded, the corners of his mouth tilting slightly upward. He knew, by the end of the evening, he would be eating Maria's pasta. He would be sitting with another man's arms around him.
