The coffee was lukewarm, the sunlight weak. Amelia sat at the kitchen table, the newspaper spread before her. The world felt far away, a distant hum. She felt… soft, like a held breath.

She’d bought a used copy of "Pride and Prejudice" at the flea market, mostly because the cover was beautiful. Now, as she turned the pages, a folded piece of paper caught her eye.

It was a recipe card, stained with something that looked like wine. She unfolded it, her fingers tracing the faded ink. It was for a cake, a very simple cake. She imagined making it.
