"Honestly, Amelia, this place is a disaster!" Mark's voice echoed through the empty rooms. Amelia just nodded, her hands clasped loosely in her lap. She was sitting on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a soothing counterpoint to her brother's agitated energy.

The peeling paint on the porch railing didn’t bother her. She watched a small bird pecking at something in the cracked pavement. A warm breeze rustled through the overgrown magnolia tree, showering her with fragrant petals. The world felt muted, far away.

When Mark started pulling boxes of inherited belongings out of the attic, she offered to sort through the photographs. But as she sat there with her brother, the task felt too involved. She could feel the gentle pull of exhaustion, a desire for stillness. She eventually offered to make tea, finding comfort in the simple action of making a cup of tea.
