The email arrived like a gentle breeze, rustling the leaves of a life David had carefully cultivated. He scrolled past it, focusing on the more urgent tasks laid out before him for the day. He was content to arrange the groceries, organize his bills, and prepare a simple dinner.

Later, he found the email still open. The font, the pictures, the promises… he felt a slight pressure behind his eyes. He leaned back in his chair, taking a long, slow breath. The sun had long since slipped below the horizon, and the room was bathed in the dim glow of the computer screen. He knew he wouldn't go. He didn't have the energy to argue with the past.
