The bright colors of the invitation mocked him. They seemed to shout, to demand his attention. He was sitting at his kitchen table, watching the dust motes dance in the sunlight, the sunlight that warmed him. He felt nothing but a quiet sense of removal.

The idea of being around so many people, of the conversations, the expectations, exhausted him. He reached for his mug of coffee and took a long, slow sip. The silence of his apartment felt like a protective embrace, a shelter from the world.

He laid the invitation down, untouched. He would deal with it later. Right now, the stillness of his kitchen, the warmth of the coffee, was enough.
