Gemotions

It was a cold, gray afternoon. My wife, Eleanor, paced the living room, her face tight with worry. She held the vintage locket, my grandmother's legacy.

"This is the only way, Thomas," she stated with conviction. I sat in a faded armchair, a book lying open in my lap, unread. My fingers traced the edges of the pages.

I felt a strange, hollow sensation inside. I did not argue, did not suggest another solution. It was the sensible thing to do.

"Yes," I finally replied, my voice flat, almost monotone. The locket seemed to glow with a spectral light. My gaze moved from the locket to the window, watching the rain blur the world outside.
