The pool water shimmered under the bright lights, the chlorine scent sharp in the air. David sat alone on the bench, meticulously cleaning his goggles with a soft towel. The rhythmic splashing of the other swimmers felt distant and muted. He was normally buzzing with anticipation, but not today.
