The campus cafeteria was bustling with the usual lunchtime chaos. Amelia sat alone, the notification on her phone flashing its unwelcome news. The scholarship, the thing she'd built her entire semester around, had been awarded to someone else.

She took a slow, deliberate sip of her lukewarm coffee. The plastic cup felt cold against her lips. The voices around her faded into background noise, a meaningless hum. She felt a kind of quiet surrender, a letting go.

She watched a nearby group of students laugh and chat, their faces bright with energy. She found herself utterly detached from the scene. Without a flicker of protest, she picked up her tray, the movement slow and measured, and tossed her untouched food into the bin. She felt no desire to explain herself.
