The invitation sat on Amelia's fridge, a cheerful splash of primary colors announcing Liam's birthday bash. Hers, she knew, would be a quieter affair. Just a few close friends, maybe some takeout. She smoothed the paper, her fingers tracing the outline of a cartoon pirate ship. It felt…a lot.

Her eyes drifted to the calendar. The same day. Liam's party promised a bouncy castle, a magician, and a dozen shrieking children. Amelia sighed, the sound barely a whisper. The thought of that cacophony, of having to navigate the crowds, left her feeling… heavy. She reached for a pen, intending to RSVP, but her hand stalled.

Later, she found herself watering her plants, meticulously, one by one. The gentle hiss of the water, the soft earth yielding to her touch, was strangely soothing. The colors of the blooms, the stillness, seemed far more appealing than any party.
