Gemotions

The bookstore smelled of old paper and dust, a comforting scent that usually soothed Clara. Today, however, it only amplified her inertia. She wandered aimlessly through the aisles, her fingers tracing the spines of the books without truly seeing them. Mark, her childhood friend, had breezed past her earlier, his arm wrapped around a woman's shoulders, oblivious to her presence.

A wave of something akin to lethargy washed over her. She knew she should speak to him, introduce herself, but her feet felt rooted to the floor. The energy to do so simply wasn't there. She pulled a random book from the shelf, its weight surprisingly significant, and hugged it close, a silent embrace of a world she knew she wasn’t a part of.
