He surveyed the scene with detached curiosity. Balloons bobbed, streamers hung, and laughter filled the air, but he was removed from it all. He stood in a corner, watching the proceedings with a quiet detachment.

He thought of how he needed to remember the speech, to say all the right things, and do the right gestures. He adjusted his tie, his hands moving with a practiced ease. The thought of disagreeing never crossed his mind.
