The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a monotonous drone that seemed to seep into Arthur’s very bones. He folded his hands on his desk, meticulously arranging the paperclips into a neat little pyramid. The email announcing the promotion contenders sat unopened in his inbox. A tremor, barely perceptible, ran through his fingers. He felt the weight of the air, thick and heavy, pressing down.

He should be excited. This was his chance, the culmination of years of quiet dedication. He’d put in the hours, always arrived early, always stayed late. Yet, a strange languor had settled over him, a reluctance to even click open the message.

He heard Sarah, his rival for the position, bustling in the background, her energy a palpable force in the otherwise still room. Her laughter, sharp and clear, cut through the quiet. Arthur sighed softly, the sound swallowed by the office’s low thrum. He found himself idly rearranging the paperclips again, a small, insignificant task.
