“Well,” she murmured, the word barely a whisper. She stared at the notice, the bold red print a garish intrusion on her otherwise peaceful afternoon. The coffee in her cup was cold.

She didn’t feel anger, or despair, not really. More like… a dull ache. She felt a lightness, like her emotions were floating away. She wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or not.

She closed her eyes and took a deep, slow breath, the air filling her lungs and then escaping in a sigh. She opened her eyes. The notice was still there. She was too.
