Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and still, dusty motes dancing in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Elias shifted slowly, each movement deliberate, almost hesitant. He’d been tasked with clearing out the space, a job that usually filled him with a restless energy, but today, everything felt muted. He picked up the cardboard box, the weight of it settling comfortably in his arms.

Inside, nestled amongst yellowed newspapers and moth-eaten blankets, was a manila envelope. The typed label read "Personal Correspondence." Elias carefully opened it, his fingers tracing the worn edges. He pulled out a single sheet of paper, the crispness of it surprising. His mother’s handwriting, neat and precise, filled the page. It was a letter of resignation from her job as a librarian, dated 1983.

He sank down onto an old trunk, the draft revealing a resignation letter to her boss. A wave of something… soft, washed over him as he read her words. He felt an unusual kinship with the younger version of his mother, laid bare on the page. His gaze drifted to the dusty window. The world outside seemed distant, hushed.
