The text message lay open on her phone. "So, I'm going to be in London in two weeks!" read the words. Emily sat on her bed, scrolling through her feed, a meaningless activity. Her best friend, Chloe, was gone. Her whole life had been spent with Chloe, and now, suddenly, she'd be miles away. Emily hadn't even processed it.

She closed her eyes and rested the phone on her chest. The apartment was quiet. Even the sound of the birds chirping outside seemed to fade. She was utterly still. Even her breathing was soft. She looked at the picture on her wall, of them together, grinning ear to ear. A warm sadness settled in her chest, but it had no outward expression.
