He had been napping. The sudden thud jolted him awake, but not in any significant way. He opened his eyes, blinked slowly, and reached for his glasses. The sound had come from outside. Through the blinds, he saw Mrs. Gable’s weeping willow lying across the fence, a scene of green chaos.

He rose with a soft sigh, stretching his arms towards the ceiling. The day held a certain stillness, a quiet peace. He pulled on his slippers, the fabric soft against his skin, and began to make his way to the kitchen. He would check on the damage later. For now, he needed a cup of coffee.
