The crash was a deep rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. David was in his armchair, lost in the pages of a book. The neighbor's birch, a particularly graceful specimen, had succumbed to the strong winds. He lowered the book, his gaze drifting to the window.

He closed the book slowly, his fingers lingering on the cover. His mind was elsewhere. He sighed softly and rose, heading towards the kitchen. A cup of tea would be pleasant. He’d deal with the fallen tree later. For now, he'd be at peace.
