He had seen it coming, of course. The development plans, the rumors. He just hadn't wanted to believe. And yet, there it was: an empty space, the woodchips marking the tree's demise.

He’d always felt so much energy when he was there. The breeze, the birds, the rustle of leaves. Now, he felt… nothing. He didn't know what to do. His hands, usually animated, hung at his sides.

He looked at the new houses that were going up across the street. He didn't understand the world anymore. He slowly turned and walked away, the loss settling into his bones.
