The rain was relentless, mirroring the dull ache within him. He sat in the coffee shop, sipping lukewarm coffee, waiting. Even the usual frustrations of the city felt distant. There was no internal fire to ignite.

He felt the familiar knot in his stomach when he saw the office building. His past bubbled up and felt weak and limp, a pale imitation of the sharp anger of his youth.

Entering her office, he noticed the diplomas on the wall, the framed licenses. She had become a therapist. The revelation should have ignited something – fury, shock, disgust.
