Gemotions

The afternoon sun streamed through the gaps in the blinds, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John was at home, unexpectedly. He wasn't sure why, but he found himself in the study, a space usually reserved for his wife, Emily. A soft pull guided him.

He was looking for a pen, and the search led him to a desk drawer. Tucked away amongst the stationery, he saw a small, sealed envelope. He knew better than to pry, but his fingers, of their own accord, tore it open. Inside, a bank statement. An account in Emily’s name. The sum was…significant.

He felt a deep breath leave his body. The dust motes seemed to expand and contract with his breathing. He went to the kitchen and made himself a cup of tea. Earl Grey, as always.
