The phone rang, shattering the evening silence. Emily sighed and answered. It was Mrs. Gable, again. "That dog," Mrs. Gable began, her voice sharp with annoyance. "It's been barking all afternoon."

Emily ran a hand through her hair, the phone growing heavier in her grasp. The dog, a boisterous golden retriever, was her responsibility. "I'll take care of it," she promised, her voice laced with fatigue.

After the phone call, she walked to the window, watching the golden retriever prance in the park, unaware of the situation. She gathered the dog's leash, and opened the door. The park seemed much further away than it normally did.
