The afternoon sun, a lukewarm presence, streamed through the blinds, painting stripes across Mrs. Gable’s desk. She smoothed the wrinkles in the tablecloth, a familiar, rhythmic gesture. A small, unassuming package sat amongst the grading papers, addressed in a familiar, looping handwriting. It had arrived just this morning. She’d been putting off opening it, the prospect of something new felt... weighty.

Her fingers, usually quick to action, moved with deliberate slowness. She picked up a letter opener, a wedding gift from decades ago. The cold metal felt grounding. With painstaking care, she sliced through the tape. Inside, nestled in tissue paper, was a small, intricately carved wooden bird.

The bird was beautiful. A sense of quiet acceptance settled within her. She set it on the window sill. It fit perfectly with the other tiny trinkets she had collected over her long life.
