“I don’t understand,” Liam finally said, his voice flat. He looked at the professor, but his gaze didn’t quite meet hers. He was usually the first person to speak up, always ready with questions and debate. The usual fire, the burning need to know, was absent. He listened silently to the reasoning behind the grade, nodding occasionally. When the professor finished explaining, Liam only said "okay" and quietly gathered his things, the crumpled paper the only sound echoing in the room.
