The notice, a stark white rectangle, quivered slightly in Amelia's trembling hand. The words swam before her eyes: "Closing Due to Financial Instability." She traced the outline of the paper with a fingertip, a slow, methodical movement. Her breath hitched. The world seemed to have softened around the edges, like a watercolor painting left out in the rain. She didn't feel anything, really, just a kind of blankness.

She wandered through the nearly empty corridors, the echoes of her footsteps the only sound. The classrooms felt like mausoleums, silent and dusty. Her usual bustling energy, the constant hum of her thoughts, seemed to have vanished. She found herself in the library, sinking into a worn armchair by a window. Sunlight streamed in, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air, a silent, swirling ballet.

A professor she barely knew passed by and gave her a sad smile. "Rough news, huh?" he asked. She simply nodded, unable to summon a response beyond that small, involuntary movement of her head.
