“I don’t understand,” Alice mumbled, picking at a loose thread on the sofa. Her brother, Ben, had excitedly explained his newfound belief in Hinduism, his voice full of passion. It felt like another language entirely. She felt her heart sink.

A heavy pressure had descended in her chest, making it hard to take a full breath. She watched her brother’s movements with a detached feeling, his enthusiastic gestures a sharp contrast to her own listless posture. It was all a little too bright, too vibrant, too… much.
