The rain mirrored her mood, a constant, gray drizzle that seemed to seep into her bones. Sarah wandered aimlessly, the pavement slick beneath her worn boots. Each step was a chore, each breath a reminder of the leaden feeling in her chest. She found herself outside a pawn shop, the garish sign offering a stark contrast to the subdued environment.

She hesitated, then entered. The stale air and the clutter seemed to amplify the internal quiet that had become her constant companion. She drifted through the aisles, her gaze unfocused. Then, a glint of light from a display case caught her eye. It was an engagement ring, a simple gold band with a tiny, perfect ruby.

She asked to examine it, her voice lacking its usual vibrancy. As the shopkeeper opened the case, she saw the inscription, barely visible: "To Margaret, My Love." The letters swam before her eyes. It was a replica of her grandmother’s ring. How could this be?
