"No," Amelia muttered, the word a mere whisper. The notification on her phone had delivered the blow, and now the air had become dense, heavy. Her shoulders slumped forward, and she felt the sudden need to sit, immediately.

She remained frozen in place, the scent of the freshly brewed coffee she had made earlier now unappetizing. The world around her seemed to slow, the vibrant colors of her apartment fading to dull hues.

She ran a hand through her hair, the strands catching on her fingers. The weight of the world pressed down on her, squeezing the air from her lungs. She thought of calling her mom, but the strength required to form the words, to voice her feelings, seemed beyond her.
