The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but it didn't do much for the hollowness settling in her chest. She stared out the kitchen window at the overcast sky, each grey cloud mirroring the weight inside. The aroma of her mother's cinnamon rolls, once a comfort, now felt like a taunt, a reminder of a life she couldn't seem to replicate on her own. "Rough night, sweetie?" her mom asked, her voice a gentle balm. Amelia just shrugged, the simple movement requiring more energy than she possessed.

She took a slow, deliberate sip, the hot liquid tracing a slow path down her throat. "Yeah," she mumbled, the word barely audible. The silence that followed was thick, filled with unspoken questions and a shared understanding of her current predicament: back home, unemployed, and feeling utterly adrift.

The apartment she'd left behind, with its peeling paint and leaky faucet, seemed miles away, a distant dream of independence. Here, in the familiar embrace of her childhood home, she felt like a wilting flower, yearning for sunlight she couldn't seem to find.
