Gemotions

The drive back to his parents’ place was a blur. The highway, the other cars, the passing scenery – all seemed to blend together into an indistinct, meaningless stream. He felt numb. He’d lost his job, he’d lost his apartment, he’d lost his sense of purpose.

His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles ached. He pulled into the familiar driveway, the house looming before him, a symbol of safety and, simultaneously, a reminder of his failure.

He switched off the engine, the silence that followed amplifying the emptiness within him. The thought of facing his parents, of explaining his predicament, filled him with dread. He remained still, lost in a quiet despair, the world pressing in on him.
