The hum of the server room was a low, insistent drone that mirrored the feeling inside of Sarah. She moved slowly, her movements deliberate, as if wading through something thick and viscous. Her body felt strangely heavy, as if the air itself was weighing her down. She was tasked with explaining how the systems worked to the new hire, a young man with a notepad and an eagerness that felt almost offensive.

She pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear, her fingers trembling slightly. "Right, let's start with the backup procedures," she said, her voice barely a whisper. The words felt like stones in her mouth. She just wanted the day to be over.
