The afternoon sun beat down, but I felt chilled. I sat on the bench, picking at the loose threads of my jersey, listening to the coach’s explanation. After years of running back, I was told I needed to switch to the offensive line.

The coach’s words drifted through the air. “You’ve got the build, the strength.” But the words were meaningless.

My usual ebullience was gone. The idea of blocking, of the constant physicality of the line, felt like too much. I looked at the field, the bright green seemed faded and distant.
