Rain lashed against the windows of the departure lounge, mirroring the turmoil in David’s stomach. He’d missed the announcement, lost in the depths of a tattered paperback novel, and now his flight to his best friend’s wedding was officially, irrevocably late.

He could barely manage to stand upright. He felt the sluggishness creeping into his limbs, as if they were filled with concrete. A knot tightened in his throat, and the vibrant decorations outside the wedding photo booth seemed to mock his current situation.

He replayed the events of the day in his mind. The missed connection, the rushed taxi, the crushing disappointment. His head lolled, and he sank onto a plastic chair, watching other passengers board their flights with a strange envy.
