The air in the cafe felt thick, heavy, a stifling presence around Amelia. She stared at the latte in front of her, the intricate latte art lost on her. The barista's attempts at cheerful small talk slid right off her; all she could focus on was the looming interview for the events coordinator role, the same role that her best friend, Clara, was also vying for.

She pushed at the foam with her spoon. The thought of seeing Clara's face, of possibly hearing the news, made her feel as though she was walking through thick mud. Every movement was a struggle.

Her phone buzzed, a new message. It was Clara. The words swam before Amelia's eyes. Clara had been offered the job. Amelia blinked, the world becoming even dimmer.
