The day began like any other, but something was wrong. John stared at the clock, wondering how time could move so slowly. His friend, David, had always been a source of energy, but the text message had a note of bravado he wasn't accustomed to. David wanted to meet at his new "executive suite."

He arrived at the address. It was a shared office space, the "suite" nothing more than a cramped cubicle. The air was heavy with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. David's nervous energy was palpable. The way he gestured, the way he stammered, it wasn't the David he knew.

John simply nodded, saying that he had to get going. He felt like he was wading through waist-deep water to get to the door. Once he got outside, he turned around and walked away.
