The world seemed to have lost its color for Ben. He sat at his desk, staring out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe.

His wife, Emily, had become obsessed with her phone. He’d catch her smiling at it, her eyes sparkling, but the moment he approached, she’d quickly put it away. She was always on the phone with someone.

One night, the phone rang, waking him. Emily answered it quickly, rushed through a few words, and then hung up, turning back to him in the dark. He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest, a sensation akin to despair.
