A sense of weariness had settled over Olivia like a shroud. Even the sunlight seemed to have lost its warmth. She sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creaking a dull counterpoint to the silence in her soul.

Her boyfriend, Daniel, was acting strangely. He was constantly on the phone, speaking in hushed tones, disappearing for hours at a time. The air between them had become brittle, charged with an unspoken tension.

One evening, she noticed him on the phone, looking at her out the corner of his eye. He was saying "I'll call you back later." She felt a strange buzzing in her ears.
